National Day of Service: What Are You Doing For Others?

“Life’s most persistent and urgent questions is: What are you doing for others, ” said Martin Luther King. 

Like other cities and countries across the world, Serve Illinois encourages people across the state to take part in National Day of Service by volunteering in their community. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was designated a National Day of Service by Congress in 1994.  

In the third greenest city in the world, the East African country of Rwanda, the government designated one day per month where everyone in Rwanda comes together to clean their environment. The day is locally referred to as “Umuganda,” which stems from a Kinyarwanda word roughly translating to “coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome.”
